PHOENIX (January 15, 2021)—The Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry is applauding the release of a final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) by the U.S. Forest Service for the Resolution Copper project near Superior, Ariz., which will be the nation’s largest once operations begin.
“Today marks the welcome end of a thorough, years-long process that will lead to Arizona being home to one of the nation’s most significant copper mining projects,” Arizona Chamber President and CEO Glenn Hamer said. “The Forest Service conducted its work with transparency and with a genuine commitment to public engagement. We thank the Forest Service for its excellent work.”
Resolution Copper will be an economic gamechanger for the region, creating more than 3,500 jobs and approximately $1 billion in positive economic impact.
“This is a tremendous job creator,” Hamer said. “Not only will Resolution Copper be a major employer, but it will lead to construction activities and new commercial development such as housing, hotels and retail. What’s more, we know from this EIS that it will be a safe, environmentally responsible project that will help meet the ever-growing demand for copper.”
The Resolution project was made possible by a federal land exchange under the 2014 National Defense Authorization Act, one of 80 land exchanges included in the bill. The project received bipartisan support from the Arizona congressional delegation at the time of the bill’s passage.
