Karvelis group files petitions, jets off to Chicago to yell about “a new political power.” Other agenda topics focus on Marx, Lenin and Trotsky

PHOENIX (July 10, 2018) – How did you spend your Fourth of July holiday?
If you were the leading agitator behind the initiative campaign to double the income tax on small businesses, you were in Chicago addressing the 2018 Socialism Conference. [LINK:https://socialismconference.org/leaders-of-the-teachers-strikes/]
In comments delivered July 6 at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place (the more proletariat-friendly student hostels must have been booked), campaign leader Noah Karvelis delivered a stemwinder to his assembled comrades.
“We’re gonna get a tax increase on the top 1 percent of income earners,” Karvelis said to wild cheers from the audience.
Karvelis did not mention that his plan represents a doubling of Arizona’s top income tax rate, nor did he mention that it targets Arizona small businesses.
“We’ve built a new organization, a new political power, in Arizona and it’s taking control right now of the future of the state!” Karvelis yelled, causing the speaker audio to short out at times.
Arizonans for Great Schools and a Strong Economy Chairman Jaime Molera said he was surprised that the income tax campaign would kick-off at an out-of-state socialism conference.
“I do not believe that the thousands of Arizonans who marched on the state Capitol were marching for a socialist agenda,” Molera said. “Did they know that they would be used as a talking point for political ideologues whose views fall far outside the mainstream of Arizona?”
Molera said the Chicago campaign launch undermines previous messages from the income tax increase proponents.
“We’ve been told for months by the tax increase activists that this wasn’t about ideology or party,” Molera said. “And yet one day after filing their petitions the campaign leadership publicly touts the extreme left position that this is truly about societal change and stating, ‘we’ve built a new organization, a new political power in Arizona and it’s taking control…of the future of the state.’ I have no doubt Arizona voters will see right through this façade. Our citizens want more resources for schools, but they will not hand over Arizona’s economy to any political fringe.”
According to the posted agenda, other topics at the three-day conference included “Lenin’s State and Revolution,” “Marxism and Intersectionality,” and the “The Revolutionary Ideas of Leon Trotsky.” [LINK: https://socialismconference.org/sched/]
“While I respect Mr. Karvelis’ right to engage with and push for the Socialist Party, I do not believe Arizona’s education policy should be subjected to an ideology that history has proven to have failed time and again,” Molera said. “Our tax and education laws should be crafted with Arizona’s children, families and economic health as the beneficiaries, not socialist dogma.”
