Kudos to the Arizona State Board of Education for selecting an assessment that will be built by Arizonans for Arizonans. AzMERIT will be aligned with the more rigorous Arizona standards that students have now had in their classroom for up to four years. The board is comprised of thoughtful leaders who only want the best for Arizona’s students and families.
The new AzMERIT will inform us of where our students are in their learning, which schools are performing, and where additional help may be needed.
I’m encouraged that we’ll have a much better gauge of how Arizona students stack up against their peers across the country in states that also maintain high standards.
As is the case with the rollout of any new assessment, there will be bumps along the way. But Arizona must remain committed to making sure that our K-12 system delivers the highest quality outputs.
